LEWISTON — The owner of a new plant store on Lisbon Street has been charged with dealing cocaine out of the business.
Sami-Luqman Muhammad, 38, of 52 Webster St., was arrested April 14 on two counts of aggravated drug trafficking. He is free on bail and still running the plant store, Garden of Via, at 260 Lisbon St.
Police said undercover drug agents have made several buys directly from Muhammad, including some from the store itself.
Drug agents said they recovered 150 grams of cocaine and crack cocaine as well as quantities of MDMA, or Ecstasy, from the store. Police said they found additional evidence of drug trafficking at Muhammad’s home.
Muhammad was taken into custody during a traffic stop near his home, police said. He was taken to the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn and later released on $5,000 cash bail.
The Garden of Via plant store just set up shop this month at its Lisbon Street location. As of 6 p.m., they were still advertising various plants on their Facebook page.
Lewiston Mayor Carl Sheline, who visited the store shortly after it opened as he does many new businesses, said he was disappointed to hear the news.
“I was really impressed by the plants they have in there,” said Sheline, who is from Arizona. “They even have several varieties of cacti.”
