LEWISTON — Police released a video Tuesday capturing the moments an unknown shooter opened fire at a Bartlett Street nonprofit organization Monday afternoon.

Police were called to the area of 256 Bartlett St. shortly before 3 p.m. for reports of gunshots, according to a Lewiston Police Department Facebook post.

Several witnesses told police a young Black male approached the Maine Immigrant and Refugee Services center and fired multiple shots toward the building. The Sun Journal previously reported the incident occurred across from Masjidu Salaam Mosque which is in the same area.

Officers found multiple shell casings at the scene and reviewed security footage from surrounding buildings.

According to the post, the suspect was seen fleeing on foot toward a wooded area behind Paradis Park.

“This area has experienced a high volume of shooting incidents over the past year,” the post said.

The shooting is the latest in a series netting 20 incidents between January and June — some 16 “shots fired” incidents were logged in the same timeframe in 2024. It also marks the latest in an increase in shooting incidents over the past several years.
