LEWISTON — One woman was carried out of her burning home on Wednesday after the roof of a building on Webber Avenue went up in flames.

Two others made it out of the building on their own and there didn’t appear to be any serious injuries.

The first calls to come in reported that the roof of the apartment house at 191 Webber Ave. was on fire at about 3:15 p.m.

Several neighbors said they never saw flames shooting from the roof, but they smelled heavy smoke from their homes.

When fire crews first arrived, smoke was pouring from the eaves on the top floor of the two-story home. Firefighters working from the ground and on ladders made quick work of the fire and then turned their attention to the upper floor of the home.

Witnesses said there were three people inside the home when the fire began. A woman with a disability was wrapped in blankets and carried out by firefighters. She was taken to a porch across the street, where she was examined by paramedics.

The home that burned is at the corner of Webber Avenue and Second Street. Police shut down a section of Webber Avenue between Second and Fourth streets as the firefighting continued.

The cause of the fire was being investigated later Friday. There had been recent renovations at the home, neighbors said, but it was not clear if those renovations contributed to the blaze.
