LEWISTON — A woman was hospitalized Tuesday afternoon after a fire at Kaydenz Kitchen Food Pantry on Lincoln Street.
Fire officials were called to 551 Lincoln St. for reports of an explosion followed by flames from a burning car spreading to the building.
The building was formerly home to Schemengees Bar & Grille, the site of a mass shooting on Oct. 25, 2023. Kaydenz Kitchen moved in last November.
When fire crews first arrived, they found a vehicle and part of the building ablaze, Lewiston fire Chief Mark Caron said.
Officials said a woman who was in the area at the time suffered burns in the blaze that were not considered life-threatening. She was being treated at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
The fire burned through a section of the building where two wings join together. Two men at the scene said they did not hear explosions, but saw flames and thick smoke rising from the side of the building.

Police blocked a section of Lincoln Street as fire and rescue crews responded to the scene. Fire crews knocked down the flames within minutes, but remained at the scene later Tuesday snuffing out hot spots.
Kevin Boilard, who operates the pantry, was discussing the blaze with fire officials at the scene and could not immediately be reached for comment.
The cause of the blaze was unknown. Lewiston fire officials called for an investigator from the Office of State Fire Marshal to aid in their search for the cause.
Officials said everybody who had been in the building when the fire started was accounted for and no additional injuries were reported. It was not immediately clear how many were in the building at the time.
According to a Maine Public Safety spokesperson late Tuesday night, two vehicles were destroyed in the blaze.
