About 60 fans, some holding signs, lined the top of the hill at Telstar High School to watch the eighth-ranked Telstar girls soccer team win its first playoff game Friday. The team’s high ranking earned it home-field advantage.

The Rebels beat Greenville 5-2, just six days after losing to the same team 2-0 on Oct. 18.

Telstar came out strong, leading 4-0 at halftime. Malia Luis scored three goals, and Brooklyn Deprey added two.

A solid defense — goalie Mya Buck, Stopper Sydney Van Buren and Fullback Emma McPherson — held off Greenville until the Lakers scored once on a breakaway and again on a penalty kick in the second half. Karrah Walker, Lexi Indermuehle and Emma Coombs back up the three defensive starters.

Coombs, a freshman from Albany, said the players are friends on and off the field. They had dinner together twice this season. They gave each other decorated homecoming boxes and worked together at a carwash/bake sale fundraiser.

“There are not many coaches that will run your laps with you,” Coombs said about Coach Katy Crooker, whom she credited with their team’s closeness.

Crooker said the day of their first playoff game, the girls were finishing a tough stretch of games.

“They played nine regular season games in a two-week period. They were tired. On Friday they were not,” she said.

“This freshman-heavy team has an exciting future,” Crooker said. “As the current team has no seniors, nearly all the players will be returning in the fall of 2026. In addition to six strong freshmen this year, the Rebels are expecting to gain approximately nine more players next year. With a much larger team and young talent, there is a possibility that the Rebel women will move to an 11-player division.”

Crooker added, “During a six-game winning streak earlier in the season, first-year assistant coach Nick Johnson established a new team tradition. He does a backflip after each game that the girls win.”

Crooker added her own somersault, delighting the team.

The Rebels next playoff game is Tuesday, Oct. 28, against Bangor Christian.

“They (Bangor) have won all their games but I think we can do it,” said Coombs. “If we work as a team, we have a chance.”

She added that they already beat undefeated Dirigo earlier in the season.
