AUBURN — The Edward Little boys soccer team found its offensive groove at just the right time.
The fourth-seeded Eddies, who scored just 25 goals in the regular season, rolled to a 5-0 win over No. 5 Bangor in a Class A North quarterfinal Wednesday evening.
“I feel great, our team hasn’t been scoring in a minute, but we got it (during the) first playoff game; feels great,” junior Abraham Maqubela said.
The Eddies improve to 6-5-4 and advance to face No. 1 Camden Hills in the semifinals on Saturday. Bangor ends the season 7-6-2.
Red Eddies coach Max Thompson knew his team was capable of scoring goals.
“I’ve been waiting for this team to find their groove,” Thompson said. “We’ve had a bunch of games this year where we’ve done this, minus the goals. I’m not surprised that we had a result like this; I’ve just been surprised we haven’t done it more.”
HOW DID EDWARD LITTLE WIN?
• The Eddies jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half. Orrin Slover started the scoring when he kicked in a rebound of a shot by Adrian Benedict Otim.
“The ball came in, got flustered around, came back out, and I just stayed in the middle there and backed up a little bit,” Slover said. “Ball came out, I was in the right place, hit the back from that and the rest is history.”
Boaz Pedro Malota Maria made it 2-0 with 11:29 left in the first half.
• Ngengele Adolphne pushed it to a three-goal lead seven minutes into the second half. Khalid Mohamed and Maqubela capped the scoring.
Maqubela had been out since preseason practices in August because of a partially torn ACL.
• Bangor managed just four shots on goal.
STATISICAL LEADERS
• Bangor: Jasper Sparks (two saves), Maddox Smith (three saves)
• Edward Little: Max Kimble (four saves), Ngengele Adolphe (goal, assist), Orrin Slover (goal),
Boaz Pedro Malota Maria (goal), Khalid Mohamed (goal), Abraham Maqubela (goal)
THEY SAID IT
• “We didn’t really make any adjustments. I think they played the same, they like to switch the field, and we were ready to handle that. I thought we did a nice job containing their speed, and the two goals were scrambles on corner kicks. Wasn’t like we got beat, just things happen.” — Don Erb, Bangor coach
• “Man, it would be the greatest feeling in the world (to beat Camden Hills on Saturday). I mean, as of right now, it already feels great, but, job’s not finished, so there’s nothing really to be happy about yet.” — Orrin Slover, Edward Little senior
• “Max (Kimble) is really reliable. It really comes down to just making sure that he keeps the guys in front of him organized. We really want to try and limit the opportunities. He had a couple tonight that he really had to make some good saves on, and he doesn’t usually have to make saves like that.” — Max Thompson, Edward Little coach
