AUGUSTA — A special election will be held Feb. 24 for the House District 94 seat representing part of Lewiston, Secretary of State Shenna Bellows announced Monday.
The district’s former representative, Kristen Cloutier, a Democrat, resigned Oct. 31 to take a job as chief of staff to Maine Senate President Mattie Daughtry.
Cloutier was in the midst of her fourth term and would not have been eligible to run again in 2026.
Caucusing for Maine’s political parties to choose candidates will begin immediately. Nonparty candidates must collect at least 50 signatures, and no more than 80, of registered voters within the district.
Petitions must be certified by municipal clerks and submitted to Bellows’ office by 5 p.m. Dec. 17. Write-in candidates must declare their candidacy by 5 p.m. Dec. 23.
Nonparty petition forms and write-in candidate declaration forms are available at the Elections Division of the Secretary of State and can be obtained by calling 207-624-7650.
The candidate elected to office will carry out the remainder of Cloutier’s term.
Several residents have expressed interest in running for the seat, including city Councilor Scott Harriman, Lewiston Public Schools Committee member Janet Beaudoin and former School Committee member Kiernan Majerus-Collins.
Harriman and Majerus-Collins previously said they planned on running next year due to Cloutier’s term limits.
Beaudoin ran for the seat in 2022 and said she plans on running again after hearing from residents “who feel unheard and unrepresented.”
