Damon Martin scored 19 points to lead sixth-seeded Poland to a 68-63 win over No. 3 Lake Region in a Class B South boys basketball quarterfinal Monday afternoon at the Portland Expo.
The victory continued a turnaround for a program that won just three games in 2023-24 and four games in 2022-23. Poland advances to play second-seeded Medomak Valley on Wednesday.
“Honestly, if I was freshman and sophomore me and I was telling myself I’d be in the quarterfinals, I would never believe it,” said Martin, a senior. “Our guys have turned our program around completely and I’m very proud.”
Poland (13-6) which lost twice to the Lakers (15-4) during the regular season, avenged a defeat against Lake Region in last year’s preliminary round.
The Knights trailed 28-24 at halftime.
“We made a defensive adjustment in the second half and came out and did something different that we haven’t done in our prior games with (Lake Region), so I think that may have thrown them a little bit. … Once we got a couple of stops, the boys started believing that we could get another one,” Poland coach Jason Knight said.
Sophomore Jake Jamo and junior Nick Jamo were Poland’s other double-figure scorers, tallying 15 and 10 points, respectively.
Sophomore Jacoby Bardsley paced Lake Region with 15 points.
MEDOMAK VALLEY 57, LINCOLN ACADEMY 41: Behind a 27-point performance from senior Mason Nguyen and 21 points from junior Kollin Donlin, the second-seeded Panthers (16-3) took down the No. 7 Eagles (5-14) in a Class B South quarterfinal.
Chase Ober and James Hanley led Lincoln with nine points apiece.
YARMOUTH 63, LEAVITT 56: Five players scored in double figures for the second-seeded Clippers (15-4), led by Evan Oranellas with 14 points, in a Class B South quarterfinal win over the No. 7 Hornets (11-8).
Ian Lawrence tallied 13 points, and Andrew Kelley, Owen Oranellas and Adam Maxwell chipped in 12 apiece for Yarmouth.
Colin Schlobohm led the Hornets with 23 points.
YORK 63, GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 45: Henry Mirick paced the top-seeded Wildcats (18-1) with 21 points in a Class B South quarterfinal win over the ninth-seeded Patriots (6-13).
Gray-New Gloucester tested York in the first half, with the Wildcats carrying just a 23-19 lead into the break.
York’s full-court pressure and overall defensive presence took the Patriots out of their rhythm in the second half, however.
Callan Forbes finished with 13 points for the Wildcats, who will play No. 4 Yarmouth on Wednesday.
Carter Corson (15 points) and Kaleb D’Andrea (14 points) paced the Patriots.
