The University of Southern Maine was outscored 25-6 in the second quarter as Wisconsin La Crosse surged past the Huskies on the way to a 66-45 victory in a Sweet 16 matchup Friday in the NCAA Division III women’s basketball tournament in New York City.

The Huskies (27-3) shot 16 for 59 from the field. They got 15 points each from Lucy Wiles and Liz Cote. Jaycie Christopher had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Grace Knupp led Wisconsin La Crosse (21-9) with 16 points, while Molly Janke and Malia Nelson added 15 each. Janke also pulled down 15 rebounds.

The Huskies led 15-12 after the first quarter, with Wiles scoring 10 points. Knupp had six points for the Eagles.

Wisconsin La Crosse then opened the second quarter on a 16-2 run. Dakota Shipley made a 3-pointer for USM with 4:52 left, but the Eagles closed the half with a 9-1 run for a 37-21 halftime lead.

Wisconsin La Crosse held a 12-8 scoring edge in the third quarter, and sealed the win in the fourth.

Next up for Wisconsin La Crosse is the winner of Friday’s late game between Hardin-Simmons and two-time defending national champion New York University, with a berth in the Final Four on the line. NYU entered Friday’s game on an 89-game winning streak, which ranks behind only two streaks by Connecticut (111 and 90 games) as the longest in women’s college basketball history.
