The top boys hockey players in Class B were honored over the weekend.

Brunswick senior defenseman Ethan Patterson was named the winner of the Evans Spear Award, given to the top senior player in Class B South, on Sunday.

Patterson was a steadying force for Brunswick/Freeport as both a quick and physical defender, and a skilled playmaker. The three-time captain led the Dragons in scoring with six goals and eight assists.

“Ethan is so very deserving of this award,” Brunswick/Freeport coach Dennis Hagemann said Monday. “He makes everyone around him better, kind of like that guy that everyone wants to catch up to on the ice, and that guy everyone wants to sit next to in the room. In my more than 20 years of coaching hockey, I put Ethan in my top five for special, talented hockey players.”

Patterson is the first player in program history to earn the award since it was created in 2005. The honor is named in memory of Evans Spear, a 2000 Yarmouth graduate who died in 2004, and recognizes a player’s character, passion and competitive spirit alongside on-ice success.

The award is presented by the Class B South Hockey Coaches Association. The other finalists were Andrew Collins of Gorham/Massabesic, Alex Mainville of Cape Elizabeth and Richard Pocius of Kennebunk/Wells.
