LEWISTON — A local transient was recovering at Central Maine Medical Center this week, four days after he was struck by a train off Whipple Street.

Police identified the injured man as 33-year-old Daniel Aldridge. Originally from Bowdoin, Aldridge had been living on the streets in Lewiston and was known to take refuge in the woods along the train tracks.

Witnesses said it appeared Aldridge had fallen asleep on the tracks before he was struck by the southbound train about 10:15 a.m. last Thursday.

When emergency crews reached him, Aldridge was still beneath the train, badly injured. He was taken to CMMC, where he has remained since.

Police found some of Aldridge’s belongings along the tracks near the area where he was struck.

As is protocol, the matter was being investigated by Maine State Railroad Police, a specialized team of investigators commissioned by the commissioner of the Department of Public Safety.
