LEWISTON, MAINE – April 4, 2026. Flames whoosh audibly after head sacristan Mark Labonte poured kerosene and lit a match to prepare for the Saturday Easter vigil at the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Lewiston. The flame, known as the Paschal fire, represents the light of Christ in the Catholic faith, and is the only source of light when parishoners enter the church to start the vigil.
