LEWISTON — A 33-year-old man struck by a train last month is recovering from broken bones and other injuries at a Portland hospital.

Daniel Aldridge, struck by the train off Whipple Street on March 26, suffered seven broken bones in his hips along with several broken ribs.

According to his father, Aldridge escaped head injuries and broken limbs after reportedly falling asleep on the train tracks.

“He survived and now he’s healing,” said Rick Aldridge. “He’s awake and talking and recovering real quick. It’s a miracle, really.”

Daniel Aldridge was described as homeless and had been known to tent in the woods near the railroad tracks where he was struck.

Witnesses said it appeared he had fallen asleep on the tracks when he was struck by the oncoming train just after 10 a.m.

Rick Aldridge said his son will come live at his Lewiston home after being released from the hospital.

When emergency crews reached him the morning of the accident, Aldridge was still beneath the train, badly injured.

Police found some of Aldridge’s belongings along the tracks near the area where he was struck.

As is protocol, the matter was being investigated by Maine State Railroad Police, a specialized team of investigators under the Department of Public Safety.

No findings from that investigation have been released.
