School Administrative District 52 in Turner will ask voters to purchase two parcels of land, including one where new multiuse athletic fields will be built.
The other parcel will become the new home to the district’s transportation department.
Voters in Leeds, Greene and Turner will have a chance April 30 to learn about the proposal. A public hearing will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Turner Primary School at 59 Cobb Road. The regular board agenda will follow.
The two parcelson Cobb Road in Turner across from the primary school and owned by Caldwell Farms equal 18.8 acres. The cost is $500,000, for which the district plans to use reserve funds so it won’t add to next year’s nearly $39.2 million budget, Superintendent Cari Medd said.
The district is in need of more athletic fields, including for lacrosse and field hockey teams. Since the board approved adding lacrosse to the district’s sports options three years ago, the number of students playing has expanded and there are six lacrosse teams this year, Medd said.
The school board approved an option to buy the property in late 2025. The property purchase needs to be voted on by the residents in the three towns.
Both the land purchase and final budget approval will be conducted by separate referendum questions from 1-7 p.m. on May 21 at voting locations in Leeds, Greene and Turner.
One parcel would be used for new multiuse athletic fields for Tripp Middle School and Leavitt Area High School.
The extra land would allow the district to relocate diesel tanks from the Tripp Middle School and Turner Elementary School campus on Matthews Way, and to add gasoline tanks, which is expected to lower the district’s fuel costs.
