Maine’s voter participation rates have been among the nation’s highest in recent federal elections.
Maine’s average participation rate — based on total ballots cast expressed as a percentage of eligible voters — was third-highest in the country over the past four federal elections, according to a Maine Trust for Local News analysis of figures compiled by nonpartisan election data resource Ballotpedia.
Relying on data from the University of Florida Election Lab, Ballotpedia’s figures indicate an average Maine voter participation rate of 67.7% across the four federal elections in 2018, 2020, 2022 and 2024.
Minnesota had the highest average voter participation rate of any state across the four elections, at 70.2%. Wisconsin had the second-highest, at 68.4%.
According to the data, Maine’s voter participation rate was sixth-highest in the nation in the 2018 federal election, fifth-highest in 2020, second-highest in 2022 and fourth-highest in 2024.
