HIRAM — A Hiram man was recovering at a Portland hospital Monday, three days after a house fire that claimed the life of his wife.
Maine Public Safety officials said 65-year-old Shannon “Shamus” Nee was in stable condition at Maine Medical Center.
Nee suffered severe burns in the blaze that claimed the life of his wife, 65-year-old Cheryl Nee.
The couple’s 2½-story home at 8 Bobbin Mill Road went up in flames just before midnight Friday. When fire crews arrived, they were able to rescue Shannon Nee from the burning building. His wife was later found deceased on an upper floor.
Shannon Nee was taken to the Portland hospital by LifeFlight helicopter.
Investigators said early indications were that the fire started in the basement and spread to the upper floor. An electrical malfunction was the likely cause, an investigator said over the weekend.
The fire remained under investigation by the Office of State Fire Marshal on Monday.
