Devin Bryant went 3 for 4 and drove in three runs for Spruce Mountain, which started fast and held on for a season-opening 13-8 softball victory Tuesday in Jay.
Laya Spear brought in four runs on two hits for the Phoenix (1-0). Santika Hodgkin also finished with three hits, and Ashley Nelson and Sophie Foss contributed two apiece.
Spruce Mountain’s Rylee Turner pitched six of the seven innings and struck out nine batters while allowing one run to earn the win.
The Phoenix plated seven runs in the first inning, four in the second and one in the third to take a 12-0 lead. Mt. Abram (0-3) got back in the game with three runs in the fourth, four in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Celia Rose led the Roadrunners with two hits, including a double, and drove in a run.
CARRABEC 14, BUCKFIELD 11: The Cobras (1-1) built a 10-0 lead in the second inning and held off a furious comeback by the Bucks (1-3) in Buckfield.
Amiya Tibbetts drove in four runs with a triple and a single for Carrabec, and Ava Welch was 3 for 5 with two doubles, three RBI and three runs scored. Winning pitcher Jillian Robinson was 3 for 4 and drove in two runs.
Buckfield’s 3-4-5 hitters — Chloee Bennett, Brooklyn Richardson and Grace Veinott — combined for 11 hits and eight RBI. Bennett had two triples, a double and a single and scored four times, Richardson was 4 for 5 with three RBI, and Veinott was also a home run shy of a cycle while driving in three runs.
BASEBALL
MT. ABRAM 12, SPRUCE MOUNTAIN 1: Brennan Mitchell and Eben Laliberte both belted two hits and drove in two runs to pace the Roadrunners past the Phoenix in Livermore Falls.
Mitchell and Laliberte each scored a pair of runs, while Killian Pillsbury scored four times. Alden Pratt came off the bench and went 1 for 2 with a double.
Mitchell also earned the win, striking out six and scattering five hits over 4 2/3 innings on the mound.
Spruce Mountain’s Blake Gemelli had game-high three hits, one of those a double. Kolby Cotton also doubled for the Phoenix.
