LEWISTON — Seven youths were charged with aggravated assault on Friday after police examined a video of the juveniles allegedly beating on a single victim on Pierce Street.
The five kids were taken to the Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland. The victim did not require hospitalization.
A video of the beating went viral on social media earlier in the week. Police were able to use the footage to help identify the suspects.
In a news release on Friday, police said the assault itself had never been reported to them. After learning of the existence of the video on Wednesday, police gathered evidence and conferred with the District Attorney’s Office and officers from the juvenile corrections system.
The seven suspects were located and arrested on Friday. They were not identified because of their juvenile status.
