LEWISTON — Police shut down sections of several streets Thursday night after another round of gunfire was reported in a neighborhood off College Street.
Police were called about 9 p.m. for reported gunfire in the area of Nichols Street. A short time later, police blocked off sections of Nichols, Wood and Holland streets.
Several people reported hearing at least a half-dozen shots in the area. One woman who lives in the area said she heard as many as a dozen shots and it sounded like an exchange of gunfire between two parties.
Footage from one home surveillance camera confirmed that at least a dozen shots were fired.
Within minutes, police swarmed the scene and began searching side streets and backyards.
Some witnesses reported seeing officers with long guns running in the area in the minutes after the shots were first reported. It appeared police were also using tracking dogs as their investigation got underway.
There was no indication anyone was struck by gunfire. It was not clear whether anyone had been taken into custody.
By 10 p.m., police appeared to be clearing the streets previously blocked, although some officers remained in the area.
It was the second report of gun play on Thursday and the third in 24 hours. Shots fired were reported earlier Thursday afternoon on Bartlett Street. The night before, gunshots were reported in the area of Pierce Street.
