LEWISTON — A homeowner escaped without injury Wednesday after a blaze that started as a kitchen fire spread.

Fire crews went to 45 Rachel Blvd. at about 3:15 p.m. for reports of smoke coming from the single-story home. When the first crews arrived, they reported heavy smoke and flames in the kitchen.

Firefighters battled the flames as they spread from the kitchen to other parts of the home. By the time the fire was knocked down, damage to the house was described as extensive.

Fire crews remained at the scene later Wednesday, mopping up and beginning an investigation into the cause of the blaze.
