DEAR SUN SPOTS: Members of Mu Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma, want to thank all educators for their commitment to the young people with whom they work every day. For many years, the first week of May, “Teacher Appreciation Week” has been observed. However, as the school year draws to a close, we still have the time to reach out to those individuals who have made a difference in our children’s lives. This group includes not only teachers, but also administrators and support staff such as custodians, librarians, cafeteria workers, bus drivers and crossing guards.

All these people face many challenges and dangers as they go to work every day with smiles on their faces. At times, we don’t realize what challenges they may be facing in their own personal lives.

For the remainder of the school year, we sincerely hope that your readers will reach out to the people who have treated their children with compassion and kindness. It might be with a gift or even a phone call or a note of thanks, which would certainly be most appreciated.

Thank you, Ms. Sun Spots, for helping us recognize this group of very special people. — members of Mu Chapter, DKG, Auburn

ANSWER: Although I’m not an educator myself, there are several in my family, including an elementary school principal, and I have spent many hours volunteering in the schools my children attended and where my grandchildren attend now.

School is much different than it used to be and we are very grateful for all the professionals who come every day to help our children learn and grow. Bless you all!

DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Poland Historical Society in the Schoolhouse Museum at 1229 Maine St. will host Angela Goebel-Bain, curator of Historical Collections at the Maine State Museum, on Wednesday, May 13, at 6:30 p.m.

Angela will tell stories of the Maine soldiers who were shipped overseas to fight in Europe during World War I, as well as stories of the families they left behind. The United States entered the war on April 6, 1917, and close to five percent of Maine’s men and women served in uniform.

Laura Brown, operations manager of Poland Spring Preservation Society, will also speak about Jane Jeffrey Ricker, a Poland connection to the war. Jane  received the Distinguished Service Cross for her contributions in the “war to end all wars.”

This event is free and all are welcome. For more information, call 998-5268. — Dave, Auburn
