A Rumford man faces distracted driving charges after his truck left Route 108 in Canton early Friday and crashed into a storage barn next to a house.

The driver, a 26-year-old, was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado when it left the road in the area of 19 Turner St., also known as Route 108, according James Urquhart, chief deputy of Oxford County Sheriff’s Office.

The driver, who was not injured, told deputies that he took his eyes off the road to look at his phone while driving and the truck traveled across the road, across a lawn and crashed against the barn, Urquhart said.

His 26-year-old passenger, also of Rumford, was taken by ambulance to Rumford Hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

“No one inside the main residence was injured,” Urquhart wrote.

Charges related to distracted driving, a traffic infraction, are pending against the driver, he said.

The road was down to one lane after the report of the crash at 5:48 a.m. and has reopened.

Deputies were assisted by local emergency responders.
