LEWISTON — John Young got choked up as he reflected on Marta Amoros Juan’s performance on Monday.
“I’m emotional because (Amoros Juan) really fought,” said Young, Hyde’s head coach. “We worked on a lot of things technically, in terms of patterns and things that we wanted to execute, but you can never work on the emotional stuff, that’s stuff they do on their own. So I’m just really pleased for her and for this school.”
Amoros Juan, the sixth seed, defeated top-seeded Emily Winkler of Thornton Academy, 6-4, 7-6 (2), to secure the girls singles championship at the Maine Principals’ Association state tennis tournament at Bates College.
Amoros Juan, a senior from Spain, was only player in the girls or boys tournament field from Hyde School in Bath.
“I have a lot of respect for the No. 1, of course, when you know that you’re going to play the final against No. 1 of the state, but I think I started the match without being afraid, not thinking that I was worse, (or) thinking that I couldn’t compete against (Winkler),” Amoros Juan said.
Amoros Juan jumped out to a 5-0 lead, immediately setting the tone against Winkler.
It appeared the match was headed to a third set when Winkler answered with a 5-1 lead in the second. Amoros Juan clawed back, however, winning four consecutive games to tie things up, 5-5.
“Yesterday in the semifinals, I started the second set 3-0 down and I was remembering (to) myself I did it yesterday so I could do it today,” Amoros Juan said.
Amoros Juan won two of the final three games of the second set, including a tiebreaker that she won 7-2.
“(Amoros Juan) did not have her A game today, she had her B game, but she had a real will to win, and I think that’s what happened,” Young said. “I’m a volunteer coach, so it’s just a really fun thing to see.”
Amoros Juan was dominant on her way to the final, never losing more than three games in a set.
She beat MCI’s Shiho Kawagishi, 6-2, 6-0, in the second round Saturday, Scarborough’s Suzann Link, 6-0, 6-0, in the round of 16, Presque Isle’s Sabine Wells-Puckett, 6-0, 6-2, in the quarterfinals and Cony’s Kira Gregor, 6-2, 6-3, in the semifinals.
Winkler had a dominant tournament run in her own right. The sophomore defeated Ellsworth’s Kennedy Lambert, 6-0, 6-2, in the second round, Cony’s Lilah Goldey, 6-0, 6-3, in the round of 16, Lincoln Academy’s Ruby Glenn, 6-1, 6-1, in the quarterfinals and Brunswick’s Molly Tefft, 6-2, 6-3, in the semifinals before dropping both sets to Amoros Juan.
