The Lewiston location of discount grocer Save A Lot announced it is closing, but has not said when or why.

“Unfortunately, due to circumstances outside of our control we are no longer able to continue serving the community we’ve come to love so much,” store officials said in a May 15 post on Facebook.

The store, at 10 East Ave. in the Lewiston Mall, was remodeled in 2023 and held a grand reopening Sept. 1, 2023. At the time, store manager Toby Rose was quoted as saying the store had been in Lewiston for more than 25 years.

The Save A Lot location in Paris announced this week it will also close in May, citing falling revenue and rising costs. The Paris and Lewiston locations have different owners.

Lewiston Mall has been undergoing significant changes in the past two years , with the addition of O’Reilly Auto Parts and the departure of Mr. Drew and His Animals Too and other businesses.

In January, Hannaford announced it was building a store at 20 East Ave., in the former Sears store. Construction is underway, with an opening expected in the winter of 2027.

That new Hannaford will be 55,000 square feet, while the Save A Lot is listed at 18,000 square feet. City permit documents indicate the estimated cost of construction at $7.25 million.

In November 2023, Shaw’s supermarket at 27 East Ave. underwent a nearly $1 million renovation.
