The Androscoggin County commissioners on Wednesday rejected a proposal to sell the Center Street properties in Auburn originally purchased for the relocation of the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office. The property includes a former Subaru auto dealership and four houses.
The commissioners directed county Administrator Jeff Chute to bring back a proposal for the sheriff’s office/public safety building to the board without a communications center and a gymnasium.
With those sections removed, the proposal to construct a new building on the Center Street properties is anticipated to come in at a lower cost of about $20 million, commission Chairperson Jane Pentheny said. Two previous proposals have failed because of high costs.
