Cheverus entered the season considered the best team in the state and the favorite to win Class A. The Stags have only bolstered both beliefs so far, and they are the unanimous No. 1 in the Varsity Maine softball poll for the third time this spring.

Gorham is No. 2 — a spot higher than last week — and has a chance to solidify that ranking in its upcoming game against No. 5 Bonny Eagle. But it’s not a sure thing; the Scots defeated the Rams in the teams’ first matchup on May 8. Bonny Eagle also has to face No. 7 Westbrook next Monday.

Class A North has some big matchups left on the slate that could impact the rankings. Oxford Hills was ranked second last week and the week before, but lost to No. 6 Lewiston and No. 10 Skowhegan. The fourth-ranked Vikings got by Edward Little on Tuesday, and they get another shot at Skowhegan on June 2, this time in Paris.

Lewiston, meanwhile, plays at rival Edward Little on Monday. Both squads are in the top three of the A North Heal point standings. The Red Eddies beat the Blue Devils on April 29.

The Varsity Maine softball poll is based on games played before May 26, 2026. The top 10 teams are voted on by the Varsity Maine staff, with first-place votes in parentheses, followed by total points.

1. Cheverus (9) 90
2. Gorham 76
3. Medomak Valley 56
4. Oxford Hills 55
5. Bonny Eagle 44
6. Lewiston 42
7. Westbrook 36
8. Gardiner 30
9. York 22
10. Skowhegan 13
