ANSWER: This sounds great. I love those basket raffles and the creative way they are put together highlighting different themes. I hope you are blessed with a beautiful sunny day!
DEAR SUN SPOTS: We are seeking more Retired Senior Volunteer Program volunteers ages 55+ from Androscoggin County to support our clients in our SEARCH Program. These people who are adults ages 60 and older, who are waiting for someone to visit them, provide companionship, and help them with their grocery shopping and other errands.
Many of our clients are isolated and are in their 70s, 80s and 90s. It would be great to have volunteers from their communities, which include Auburn, Lewiston, Lisbon/Lisbon Falls, Greene, etc.
SEARCH (Seek Elderly Alone, Renew, Courage, & Hope) is a program of Catholic Charities. We have wonderful volunteers who are matched one on one to our older and isolated clients. They give three to four hours per week to a senior by providing home visits or assisting them with transportation for errands in the community. If you are interested in volunteering, we would love to talk to you about joining our program and volunteering with us!
For more information about becoming a volunteer with us or referring an older adult in need of our services, please call our main office at 784-0157. We will send you a volunteer application packet and brochure and reach out to the potential client who needs services to learn more.
We hope you will join our program by becoming a volunteer and help to make a difference in the life of an isolated older adult in your community. — Wendy, no town
ANSWER: I am involved in an organization like this in my community (when I’m not being Ms. Sun Spots!) and find it to be very rewarding. I have two clients in their 90s and especially enjoy listening to their stories and asking for their advice.
My favorite thing, though, is making them laugh! Our elders need to see different faces, have a diversity of interaction, and know that someone cares. Give this volunteer opportunity a try; you won’t be sorry.
