MEXICO — The town is seeking approval of the $6.72 million budget proposal from voters at the referendum scheduled for June 9.

Town Manager Jack Gaudet said the budget of $6,724,368 includes the Oxford County tax and Mexico’s share of the local costs for Regional School Unit 10.
There is a $600,000 drop in the proposed budget over the current fiscal year.
The current budget is $7,324,777, and included borrowing $1 million and taking $500,000 from undesignated funds as the local share of a $4.5 million fire station grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Voters also approved $660,000 for a new fire truck and a new plow truck.
Last year’s spending means good news for the taxpayers for fiscal year 2027, with no capital equipment purchases expected and what Gaudet called a “normal highway project plan.”
Gaudet said the undesignated fund is still at the level where it should be, somewhere around $1.34 million. The town will be able to continue with the practice of using a portion of that to help offset the property tax rate.
Gaudet, who began his second stint as town manager in Mexico on June 18, 2025, will retire on June 30. Select board Chairman Richie Philbrick said May 19 that they will have a new town manager come July, pending the signing of a contract.
Gaudet first served as Mexico town manager for 3 1/2 years until 2020 when Raquel Welch-Day succeeded him. Welch-Day announced her departure in May of 2025.
Voting on the 20-article referendum warrant will be held on Tuesday, June 9, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the Calvin Lyons Hall at the Mexico Municipal Building, 134 Main St.
