Former Gov. Paul LePage is waiting in the wings. Four Democrats are hoping to face him in the general election for the right to represent Maine’s 2nd Congressional District.

State Auditor Matt Dunlap, State Sen. Joe Baldacci, former congressional staffer Jordan Wood and social worker Paige Loud are competing for the Democratic nomination on June 9.

The winner will be up against LePage, the only Republican candidate in the conservative-leaning district that has voted for Democrat Jared Golden in each of the last three elections. (Golden is not seeking reelection.)

Republicans view the seat as a prime pickup opportunity in the high-stakes battle for control of the U.S. House of Representatives. Currently, the party holds a narrow five-seat majority in the 435-member chamber.

On Thursday, Maine Public and the Portland Press Herald will host a debate between the Democratic candidates. The Press Herald’s Billy Kobin will co-moderate.
