LEWISTON — Leya Diangani comes to Save A Lot to shop the store’s weekly deals and get her groceries.

The Lewiston woman found out Thursday the longtime neighborhood grocery store at 10 East Ave. would be closing soon.

“I’m so sad,” said Diangani. “This is my shop. I love shopping here.”

The owners of the Save A Lot location, which has been in Lewiston for more than 25 years, announced the closing earlier this month. With Hannaford set to build a new supermarket on the property, the landlord has exercised an option to terminate Save A Lot’s lease, store officials said.

They expect to close around June 15, depending on remaining inventory, and are offering a 20% discount on remaining items beginning June 1.

Elise Snowdeal of South Paris was in the Lewiston store Thursday. She frequently shopped at the Save A Lot in Paris.

The Paris store, which has different owners than the Lewiston location, closed May 20, with owners citing falling revenue and rising costs. In Maine, that will leave only a Portland location under the Save A Lot brand.

Snowdeal said Save A Lot has better deals than the typical big-name grocery stores. Seeing another location near her closing came as a shock.

“This is kind of crazy,” she said. “I feel like it was always busy whenever I went. My whole family shopped at Save A Lot and now we have to go to places like Walmart or Hannaford to try and find good deals. This is a huge loss.”

Lewiston resident Misty White called the news of the closing “troubling.” She said it will have an adverse effect on residents, particularly those from the city’s large Muslim population.

“I know a lot of people that live in this community that use this store,” said White. “I know some of the refugees like the halal food here and are a large part of our community. I’m sad for them.”

Diangani echoed those sentiments, and said the loss of the store will leave a hole.

“I don’t know,” said Diangani. “I find everything I need at Save A Lot. I’m thinking of where I’ll find what I need, but I’m not sure where I’ll go after they close.”
