Gould Academy graduate Jasper Wills, of Newry, will report to the United States Military Academy at West Point on June 29 for Reception Day, or “R-Day,” which marks the start of new cadet basic training and leads directly into the academic year.

“I’m excited,” said Wills, who received a formal presentation of his appointment letter during Gould Academy’s commencement ceremony May 30 at the Bethel campus.
West Point alumnus Chris Casey presented the appointment and noted that the academy receives 13,000–14,000 applications annually. He said candidates must secure a nomination and admission is highly competitive.
“It was especially challenging this year,” Casey said. “We had a higher number of applicants and a much higher number of qualifiers. This year, we only had three from Maine that are going to West Point. One of them is coming from your high school. That is impressive.”
After West Point, Wills hopes to pursue a career in politics.
“I, for one, am pretty frustrated with the leadership in the country, and going to West Point, there is no better stepping stone toward the role of being a leader of character and moral worth,” he said.
A varsity alpine skier and golfer, Wills plans to pursue a master’s degree in business. He plays in the school band and, two years ago, volunteered more than 100 hours with the Mahoosuc Kids Association.
He said he found the experience deeply rewarding.
“Giving back to underprivileged kids in the community was amazing for me. It piqued my determination to be a leader,” he said.
Wills was selected to attend Dirigo Boys State and received a statewide American Legion scholarship.
His brother, Silas, 15, is also a Gould Academy student.
