DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Poland Historical Society, in the Schoolhouse Museum at 1229 Maine St. in Poland, will welcome Bernard Fishman, Director of the Maine State Museum, on Wednesday, June 10, at 6:30 p.m.
Fishman’s presentation, “Historic Maine in 3-D”, will include pictures of 19th century Maine using “stereoviews”, a popular type of photography at that time. 3-D glasses will be provided to get the full effect of the double-imaged stereoview.
The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. For more information, call 998-5268. — David, Auburn
ANSWER: The folks at this historical society always have something interesting to share. Invite a friend and go see what this is all about!
DEAR SUN SPOTS: I have a bicycle in excellent condition but it needs servicing because it has not been used for the past four years. Once in Sun Spots you mentioned that a man in the area repaired bicycles and gave them to needy persons. I would like to donate mine. Would you please publish this information again?
Thank you very much for checking your famous Rolodex and maybe we’ll see the info again in Sun Spots. — Anita, Lewiston
ANSWER: I believe you are thinking of Peter Oakes whose bike repair and donation ministry is on hold due to the passing of his spouse, Christina. On the organization’s Facebook page, Free Bikes for Kids — Central Maine (https://www.facebook.com/groups/1515227922549057/) , he explains his decision.
There very well may be other folks in the area who will service your bike and donate it to someone in need. I’m certain a local bike shop can direct you or perhaps they will take it in and service it themselves.
Check out Busytown Bikes at 996 Sabattus St. (241-3233), Roy’s Bicycle Shop at 75 Farwell St. (783-9090), and Rainbow Bicycle at 97 Lisbon St., (784-7576 ) all in Lewiston.
The Maine Bicycle Coalition directory (https://www.bikemaine.org/bike-shops/) lists all these shops as accepting bike donations. Good luck with finding a new home for your bike and let us know how it all ends up.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: I moved to the area in January and because I have a chronic illness, I’m looking for a good acupuncturist in the L-A area. I thought it would be great to have some Sun Spots recommendations so I’m asking other readers where they go. — Nan, Auburn
ANSWER: This is your chance to help, dear readers! Acupuncture can be helpful for pain management and more. Please send your recommendations so we can assist Nan.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: I want to get the word out about a nonprofit I support, Wilderness Miracles on Lisbon Road in Bowdoin (near Rocky Ridge Apple Orchard).
Their mission is taking care of injured, orphaned, and sick wildlife to return a healthy animal back to the wild.
You can sponsor a wild animal in their care, volunteer, or donate items like cleaning and medical supplies, medication and nutrition supplies, and soft toys and items that can be used for bedding. The full wish list: https://www.wildernessmiracles.org/wishlist.
For more information, call 720-0074 or email [email protected].
ANSWER: On its website, there are great visuals to show folks who have found injured or sick birds and animals how to proceed with helping them. Go to https://www.wildernessmiracles.org.
