Come for the nostalgic soundtrack, and stay for the marvelous performances.

L/A Community Little Theatre’s production of “The Marvelous Wonderettes” is a charming, sweet and ferociously sung jukebox musical that soars due to the talent and charisma of its central quartet.

The basic premise of the show captures two singular nights: Super Senior Prom night at a high school gym in 1958, and, a decade later, the reunion. The Marvelous Wonderettes were booked for the prom after the “butthead” leader of the boy’s Glee Club was caught smoking and subsequently suspended.

Ten years later, the Wonderettes are booked for the reunion, and though lives have changed, the friendships and amazing harmonies remain.

The show is as sweet as candy, and rich harmonies add an enrapturing texture to the show. Whether you lived through the times and the music, or have a deep appreciation for the music and vocal groups of the ’50s and ’60s, one of the main draws of this show are the perfectly sung and rendered interpretations of “Sandman,” “Lollipop,” and “You Don’t Own Me,” to name a few.

But the performances are also worth witnessing.

Jordan Clatchey plays the sweet but self-centered Cindy Lou, with a turn in the second half that will have you rooting for her character. Her strong vocals and acting include a heartfelt and beautiful rendition of “Leader of the Pack,” made popular by The Shangri-Las in 1964.

Janelle Raven gives a standout performance as the highly organized and driven Missy. Her vocals are extremely impressive, and she belts out classics with ease. She truly is a powerhouse performer.

Casey Rose Waters plays Betty Jean, who is the class clown (with a sensitive side) offering an impressive performance.

And Hannah Hanson plays Suzy, a ditzy, happy-go-lucky character with depth, hilarity and an outstanding vocal performance.

Each character sings wonderfully, and each has a song that highlights them. But some of the most impressive moments of the show come when the quartet tightly harmonizes and comes together as one cohesive unit. 

Directors Sophia Wood and Justin Morin create a perfect blend of heart and nostalgia in this production, with Matt Scala bringing the music and harmonies to life as the music director.

A shout-out also goes to lead costumer Katy Albert, who handcrafted perfect-period bubble dresses for each character and made the decade shift feel real and natural.

And it was amazing to hear the songs performed by a real pit orchestra. Gabby Vallée did a great job handling all the music, and leading and conducting the wonderful musicians. 

I smiled through the entirety of “The Marvelous Wonderettes,” and I am sure any audience member who has even an inkling of interest in the times and music of two very musically rich decades would appreciate this intimate, wonderfully performed production.
