DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Androscoggin Historical Society is celebrating the 250^th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and our country’s birthday with a historical display of authentic items. Accompanied by a triptych with historical information, this is truly an informational display. Especially interesting are the paintings of George and Martha Washington.

The historical society, located at 93 Lisbon St. in Lewiston, is open Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and on Fridays from noon to 4 p.m. Admission is free but donations are welcome. — Cynthia, Lewiston

ANSWER: I visited the society’s web site (androhistory.org) and was dazzled by all the valuable information and photos. There’s certainly a lot going on, with so many busy bees hard at work making things happen. 

Did you know that the society offers Civil War discussion groups with upcoming dates on July 16 and Aug. 20? 

And, like many nonprofits, the society is always seeking volunteers. There are several opportunities for people who are interested in giving their time and energy – from high-schoolers to retirees. DEAR SUN SPOTS: I suspect I have mold in my home and would like to have recommendations from other readers regarding who they have worked with to resolve this issue. I’ve been told that the best thing to do is to hire an independent contractor specializing in discovering the mold first, rather than a mold remediation company.

I don’t see any mold but there is a musty smell in some areas on damp days even though I’ve had a dehumidifier installed. I know the house I live in had water damage before I moved in. I have had strange health symptoms and my health care provider has suggested I investigate this possibility further. 

I have researched companies online but I would feel more confident if I had recommendations from my Sun Spots friends who have gone through this same thing. Is there anyone out there who can help me with this? I’d really appreciate it and it would give me so much peace of mind as I move forward. — Janey, Lisbon

ANSWER: I’m sorry to hear you’re going through this. Although I’m not an expert, I do know that if your home is given the all-clear, you still may have been exposed to mold in a previous home, in a vehicle, or even in a place you visit often. Mold is everywhere in our environment, but it can affect some people more than others. I hope you get some answers and are on your way to feeling better soon.
