Cooling centers will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Friday at the Auburn Senior Community Center, 48 Pettengill Park Road, and at Alter L/A, 70 Horton St. in Lewiston.
The National Weather Service issued an extreme heat watch for parts of southern, central and western Maine for Wednesday through Friday. The watch is in effect in southern sections of Oxford and Franklin counties, York County and Cumberland County, as well as Androscoggin, Kennebec, Sagahadoc and Lincoln counties.
Temperatures are expected to hit the 90s late Tuesday and climb to the mid- or upper-90s through Thursday, dropping slightly going into Friday.
