LEWISTON — A local man was indicted by an Androscoggin County grand jury this week on charges stemming from a shooting near a park on Bartlett Street in April.

Nikolas Rancourt, 22, was indicted on charges of reckless conduct, reckless conduct with a firearm and discharging a firearm near a dwelling.

The shooting on the afternoon of April 30 forced the closure of the Italian Bakery at 225 Bartlett St. as police descended on the scene to search for the shooter.

The gunfire caused alarm in the downtown, which had been vexed by gunplay for two days straight.

The shots were fired about 2 p.m. a short distance from the Masjidu Salaam mosque, which had been the target of gunfire in the recent past.

The incident caused additional alarm since the shots were heard near Mark W. Paradis Park, a playground typically populated by children in the afternoon.

No one was hurt in the shooting. Police found and arrested Rancourt within minutes of arriving and they recovered the gun he allegedly used. His motive for allegedly opening fire was unclear.

Although Rancourt was originally believed to be from Turner, he lists an address on Pierce Street in Lewiston in court documents.

Rancourt is expected to make his initial appearance in court Wednesday.
