LEWISTON — Three people were indicted by an Androscoggin County grand jury this week, charged with luring a man to a Pine Street apartment where he was beaten and burned in May.

The May 11 attack at 73 Pine St. left a 37-year-old man with burns and other wounds and his dog badly injured.

Investigators said the victim was lured to the apartment by a friend, who was forced by the suspects to invite the victim over. When the man arrived, he was confronted by the suspects, who tied him up, beat him with the butt of a handgun and burned him with a pot that had been heated on a stove, police said.

The suspects told the victim they would kill his wife and kids if he did not give them money they mistakenly thought the man had, according to police.

Two of the suspects — Zachery “Pee Wee” Paradis, 44, and Jennifer Dionne, 42 — were arrested shortly after police arrived at the apartment after a tenant reported hearing a man screaming. A third man, Nicholas Coy, 31, of Yarmouth, was arrested two days later.

Coy was indicted by the grand jury this week on charges of kidnapping, elevated aggravated assault, criminal threatening with a weapon, terrorizing, aggravated cruelty to animals and falsifying evidence.

Coy has a long criminal history in Lewiston that includes gun possession and robbery. He was arrested earlier in the year on a charge of arson in connection with a fire on Grove Street in December.

After making bail on that charge, Coy eluded police until he was arrested May 13 and charged in connection with the attack.

The grand jury also indicted Paradis and Dionne, charging each with kidnapping, elevated aggravated assault, aggravated assault, criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon and aggravated cruelty to animals.

Paradis, too, has a long criminal history in the area and was released from federal prison in March.

In 2022, he was sentenced to 51 months in prison on gun and drug charges. He was released from federal prison March 16.

In 2017, Paradis was charged with elevated aggravated assault and being a felon in possession of a firearm after a man was shot in the stomach on Holland Street in Lewiston. The charges were later dismissed.

The charges of animal cruelty against the trio were filed after police discovered that during the alleged attempted robbery, the suspects also beat a dog that belonged to the tenant of the apartment where the attack occurred.

The border collie-shepherd mix was rushed to the emergency animal clinic where it was initially expected to succumb to its injuries. Instead, the dog survived and remained under care for several days.

The dog has since been returned to its owner.

Coy and Paradis remained at the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn on tuesday. Dionne has been released on bail.
