Cheverus field hockey
The graduation of Lucy Johnson, the state’s all-time leading scorer, didn’t prevent the Stags from winning their third straight Class A championship. Midfielder Joey Pompeo took over as the anchor, and Cheverus remained a dominant offensive and defensive team. They were also resilient, rallying in the South final and scoring late to beat Skowhegan in the state championship game.
Maranacook/Winthrop lacrosse
The Black Bears went 17-0 and won their second straight Class C title. They were dominant from start to finish, routing teams in higher classes and outscoring their foes 282-28 (54-7 in playoffs). They were loaded with talent, including co-KVAC players of the year Stella Stewart and Cooper Davis, and career 100-goal scorer Alice Ferran.
Mattanawcook Academy basketball
Good luck finding a team in any sport that was as dominant as Class C champion Mattanawcook Academy was this winter. The Lynx were the only unbeaten basketball team — boys or girls — in the state, going 22-0 en route to their first state title. They won by an average of 34.8 points and were victorious by single digits just once, a 55-46 victory over Penobscot Valley on Dec. 22.
Yarmouth/Freeport hockey
Yarmouth/Freeport finally got over the hump in 2025-26 by defeating three-time defending state champion Cheverus 1-0 when Avery Guyer potted the game’s only goal late in the first overtime. Yarmouth/Freeport, which also beat the top-ranked Edward Little co-op in the North final, had lost to the Stags in the state final in 2023 and 2024.
