We only had a few people who knew where last week’s Mystery Photo was located. The old memorial stone for Jacob and Bonney Leavitt is in Turner at the Upper Street Cemetery (also known as the South Turner Cemetery) on Upper Street in Turner. In a random drawing from all the correct entries, Marjorie Luce of Lewiston was picked as the winner of a $25 Hannaford Supermarket gift card. She told us: ” Interesting photo of my 4X great-grandfather and great-grandmother’s memorial stone at the Upper Street Cemetery in Turner, Maine. Jacob Leavitt was born in Pembroke, Massachusetts, in 1732, died in Turner, Maine, in 1814. His wife, Sylvia Bonney, was also born in Pembroke, Massachusetts, in 1733 and died in Turner, Maine, in 1810, parents of twelve known children. His grandson Joseph Leavitt (my 2XGGF) is said to be the first person to be born in Turner, Maine, in 1777. His son, also Joseph Leavitt, fought in a few Revolutionary War battles along the coast in Massachusetts, realized he didn’t care for battle, so he came to Maine to survey land in what was Sylvester, finally incorporated as Turner, Maine, earning him the nickname of “Quaker Joe.”
