Ruby Glenn, Lincoln Academy freshman
Glenn was outstanding in her first year of high school tennis, going 11-2 and helping the Eagles reach the Class B South semifinals. She was named to the KVAC Class B/C first team. Glenn reached the quarterfinals at the state singles tournament by taking down Leah Hildebrand (Maranacook), Olive Van Hoewyk (Camden Hills) and Alice Korzekwa (Presque Isle).
Kira Gregor, Cony junior
Gregor helped the Rams reach the Class B South final by going 13-0 in team matches. The KVAC Class B/C first-teamer only lost four games. In the state singles tournament, the second-seeded Gregor reached the semifinals by defeating Olivia Turner (Calais), Calie Soderberg (Orono) and Sophia Turker (Falmouth). In the semifinals, she lost to the eventual champion, Marta Amoros Juan of the Hyde School, 6-2, 6-3.
Phoebe Reilly, Falmouth sophomore
Reilly led the Navigators to a third straight Class A team championship and helped them push their winning streak to 48 matches. She went 11-3 in team matches as the Navigators’ No. 1 singles player. She picked up victories over Ivy Hatch (NYA) and Lydia Garofalo (Maranacook) before losing to Brunswick’s Molly Tefft 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 in the state singles quarterfinals.
Lilia Root, Thornton Academy senior
Root, Thornton Academy’s No. 2 player and captain, finished the season 9-0 and lost only 10 games in those matches. Coach William Weeks said Root, with Emily Winkler, helped raise the expectation of the team. Root was named to the SMAA first team.
Molly Tefft, Brunswick senior
Tefft led the Dragons to the Class A North title and a state final appearance. The KVAC Class A player of the year went 16-0 during the regular season and playoffs. She reached the state singles semifinals with victories over Jade Young (Madison), Kulaini Granholm (MDI) and Phoebe Reilly (Falmouth).
Sophia Turker, Falmouth junior
Turker reached the state singles quarterfinals as an unseeded player, losing to Cony’s Kira Gregor, 6-1, 6-2. She was the Navigators’ No. 2 singles player, going 13-1 in team matches and helping them to the Class A championship by defeating Brunswick’s Ellie Meserve, 6-0, 6-3.
Sabine Wells-Puckett, Presque Isle junior
Despite being unseeded, Wells-Puckett won two matches in the Region 1 singles qualifier. She proceeded to win three matches in the state singles tournament before getting knocked out in the quarterfinals by eventual champion Marta Amores Juan. In team play, she went 12-0 as the Wildcats reached the Class B North final.
Emily Winkler, Thornton Academy sophomore
Winkler, the Varsity Maine Player of the Year, went 7-0 and only lost nine games in team matches as the Golden Trojans’ No. 1 singles player. The Austrian native was the top seed in the singles tournament and advanced to the state final by defeating Kennedy Lambert (Ellsworth), Lilah Goldey (Cony), Ruby Glenn (Lincoln Academy) and Molly Tefft (Brunswick).
Coach of the Year
Sarah Boeckel, Cape Elizabeth: Boeckel led the Capers to the Class B championship, their first state title since 2016. Fourth-seeded Cape Elizabeth knocked off top-seeded Yarmouth and third-seeded Cony in the South playoffs before defeating Waterville 3-2 in the state final.
