Gage Ziehl struck out eight batters in five innings as the Portland Sea Dogs defeated the Somerset Patriots 2-1 Sunday at Hadlock Field.
Portland (48-41) took two out of three from Somerset (45-45).
Ziehl (5-3), a fourth-round draft pick of the New York Yankees in 2024, allowed two hits and walked one batter against New York’s Double-A affiliate.
Portland took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning against Somerset starter Ben Hess. Matt Fraizer tripled home Mason White, who reached on a single. The Sea Dogs doubled their lead in the eighth, when Jack Winnay doubled home Nelly Taylor.
The Patriots’ Coby Morales homered with one out in the ninth off Sea Dogs closer Patrick Halligan, who sandwiched two groundouts around a walk to earn his seventh save.
Hess (2-2) allowed two hits and struck out seven over five innings.
