The Marshwood All-Star baseball team was eliminated from title contention Wednesday when it lost its second game of the day to fall into the consolation bracket at the Cal Ripken 9U World Series in Florence, Alabama.

After posting a 10-0 win over Florence (Alabama) Red in four innings Wednesday morning, the fifth-seeded Hawks lost a defensive duel, 3-0 to No. 4 Puerto Rico in the afternoon to finish 3-2 overall.

Marshwood next plays at 3 p.m. Thursday in the consolation bracket against an opponent that will be determined earlier in the day.

Marshwood and Puerto Rico limited each other to three hits. Archer Catanese had two and Brady Smith had the other for the Hawks.

Leonardo Ruiz was the standout at the plate and on the mound for Puerto Rico. He went 1 for 2 with a double, an RBI and a run. He also pitched all six innings.

In the earlier game, Marshwood pitchers James Galuppo and Alexander Harrison combined to hold 12th-seeded Florence Red to three hits while striking out five batters.

Harrison also had two hits and two runs. Leadoff hitter Bryce Carlin led Marshwood with three hits, including two doubles, and scored three runs. Catanese singled, tripled and drove in a pair of runs, and Smith also knocked in two runs.
