Take a trip to the land of Oz, via Auburn

AUBURN — The classic musical “The Wizard of Oz” will open Friday, Aug. 7, for a two-week run at L/A Community Little Theatre.

The musical is based on L. Frank Baum’s classic novel of young Dorothy Gale, who is swept away by a tornado from her Kansas farm to the magical land of Oz. To make it home safely, Dorothy must learn an important lesson: There’s no place like home.

Performances are Aug. 7, 8, 13, 14 and 15 at 7:30 p.m., and Aug. 9 and 16 at 2 p.m. Individual show tickets and subscriptions are available online at laclt.com or by calling 783-0958. Tickets will also be available at the door.

Support Make-A-Wish Maine at Lost Valley in Auburn

The 2nd annual Wishes in the Valley fundraising will take place from 3-9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, at Lost Valley Ski Area.

The event will feature live music with Ish and Fire in the Hole, food trucks, chairlift rides, bucket golf, disc golf, cornhole, a photo booth, a magician, karate board breaking, raffles, and live and silent auctions.

Explore our relationship with water at Rangeley film event

RANGELEY — On Thursday, Aug. 6, Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust, along with Rangeley Friends of the Arts, will present a collection of short films that explore our relationship with water.

“Healing the Sweet Flowing Waters: A Conservation Film Night” will reveal how water “connects people, fish, and wildlife, sustains our way of life, and inspires us to restore and protect this resource for future generations,” say organizers.

The evening will feature the premiere of Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust’s short documentary “Healing the Sweet Flowing Waters,” highlighting efforts to restore the Kennebago River and reconnect native brook trout habitat.

See ‘dance-play’ with Karen Montanaro in South Paris

SOUTH PARIS — “Tanzspiel: A Spectacular Evening Celebrating Karen Montanaro” will take place at Celebration Barn Theater on Saturday, Aug. 8, from 7:30-10 p.m.

The first half of the program features “Tanzspiel,” a “one-woman tour de force and a triumph of athleticism, artistry, and imagination,” according to organizers. “In this show, whose title means dance-play in German, Karen blends the art forms of mime and dance to create theater with rare physical and emotional power.”

After a brief intermission, the second act will feature a reimagined version of Celebration Barn’s annual Spectacular, with performances, remarks, and other festivities celebrating Karen, who currently tours her one-woman shows and offers residencies in movement, mime, and dance in schools throughout the United States.

DENMARK — Phil West and “Lights Out!” are coming to the Denmark Arts Center on Saturday, Aug. 8, for a night of laughter, music and merriment.

The Barn Swallow Theatre’s featured late-night comedy talk show will feature special guests, live music and sketch comedy “all wrangled together with Phil’s quirky sense of humor,” say organizers.

Catch chart toppers Pure Prairie League in Gardiner

GARDINER — The legendary group Pure Prairie League will appear at Johnson Hall Opera House for one night Wednesday, Aug. 5.

The band’s 50-plus year history as one of country-rock’s pioneering forces includes the classic “Amie” and the #1 single “Let Me Love You Tonight.”

According to organizers, one reviewer recently wrote: “PPL’s sound combines sweet memories with edgy, contemporary muscle. Their vocals are as strong as Kentucky moonshine and the musicianship and performance skills are as sharp as a straight razor.”

Be inspired by Whale Bones in Bath

BATH — Inspired by a selection of Grimms’ fairytales, The Chocolate Church Arts Center will present an original theatrical performance by an ensemble of artists from around the country.

“Whale Bones” will “travel with the audience through the historic nooks and crannies of the Chocolate Church Arts Center. It will be a fusion of theatre, live music, puppetry, and spectacle,” say organizers. “It is a celebration of stories and storytelling, life and death, and the strangeness and delight of being alive.”

Performances of “Whale Bones” will be Aug. 7, 8, 9, 14, 15 and 16, all at 7:30 p.m.
