Paul LePage is back, but there’s nothing new about him we haven’t already seen and nothing we want to revisit. He’s grossly insulting (believing he’s funny), calling himself “Trump before Trump,” making blatantly racist and sexist comments that don’t belong in political campaigns or polite conversations.
LePage was always an embarrassment for Maine, and he’d be happy to embarrass it again. I’ll never forget visiting friends in Massachusetts who were ready with cringeworthy questions about Maine’s infamous governor. (“Did he really say that?”) But, we’re never going back there.
LePage got into office by finding a third-party candidate who’d split the vote for him. A dishonest tactic, it drove Maine to embrace ranked-choice voting, which increases our choices and our power as voters. In Maine, our votes really do matter!
It’s highly ironic, but it’s thanks to Paul LePage’s awful record that we use RCV and why we’re not going to be cheated out of our best choice for Maine’s 2nd District: Matt Dunlap.
