KINGFIELD — Jingling bells and voices united as carolers rendered their a cappella version of familiar Christmas carols Thursday at the Willy Whack Shop on Route 27, just north of town.

Members of a singing group known as the Pussywillows gathered to carol at the shop in recognition of its expansion before they headed into town to carol along Kingfield’s Main Street.

For about 30 years, the group of women from Anson, Solon and Farmington have joined their voices, sometimes entertaining at nursing homes but mostly meeting in member homes, Suzanne Debiase said.

“We’ll sing anywhere there’s a need to lift people’s spirits, especially around the holidays,” she said.

The group of friends enjoy singing. Sometimes there is only five singing; other times that number swells to a dozen, she added. In past years, the group has performed at Lakewood in Skowhegan and on the streets of Portland. They always perform for the Sunshine Ladies of Anson, who create a gift bag for every child in Anson every Christmas, Debiase said.

Along with the singing, there’s also time for visiting and something good to eat, member Janet Edwards of Anson said.

They all agreed it’s about fun.

Singing is contagious, and something everyone can do, Debiase said.

Open for just over a year, the Willy Whack Shop offers a variety of antiques, treasures and several Maine-made products, Callahan said. Her partner, Chris Williams, creates decorative wood items, including handcrafted bowls and jewelry for the shop.
