LIVERMORE — GFWC/Livermore Falls Women’s Club met recently to begin the second year of the current administration.

Co-President Linda Burdo began the meeting by introducing three students from RSU 73 who attended the Maine Youth Leadership Conference at the University of Southern Maine earlier this year. Kenda Newman, Brooke Steele and Emily Lafleur told the club how much they enjoyed the conference and how much they learned about the different styles of leadership. They returned eager to demonstrate their new leadership skills. They have since been devoting more time in the community as volunteers. The club helps to sponsor students to this conference every year.

The second part of the program involved the Adult Education Program in RSU 73. Eileen Miazga, director for Adult and Community Education, and Michelle Guillaume, College Transitions instructor, told the group that adult education is no longer just about a GED. Much more goes on to get students ready for college, how to apply for jobs and work ethics.

Ellen Young reported on her attendance at Women’s Legislative Council in Augusta. The topic for September was tar sands and its possible effects on Maine’s environment.

The club’s next meeting will be Thursday, Oct. 24, at the North Livermore Baptist Church. This will be the annual membership meeting. To remain a viable entity in the community, the group needs new and younger members. Anyone interested is asked to call Linda Burdo at 320-3428 or Marion Hogan-Posa at 897-2788.

The community service organization meets five times a year and holds an occasional workshop depending on the projects that need to be completed. In September, two members attended the New England Regional Conference in Hampton, N.H. In October, members planned to attend the Maine Fall Conference in Orono.

All meetings are on a voluntary basis. The club supports many local organizations including the food pantry, library and Washburn/Norlands.
