LEWISTON – Cam Poussard is getting used to being a big-game goaltender.

Still just a sophomore, Poussard has already taken his Lewiston squad to a state final. Time will tell if he can take that next step, but getting there is proving to be just as much fun – and just as taxing.

Poussard stopped 32 of 34 shots – including 17 of 18 in the third period – as the Blue Devils bolted out to an early three-goal lead and held on for a 4-2 win over Scarborough on Monday at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee.

“For the most part, I could see the puck really well, surprisingly,” Poussard said. “My defense did a great job keeping the guys away out front. There were a couple of instances, though, where I had no idea where the puck was at all.”

That included a puck that dances across the goal line with the Red Storm on a 5-on-3 power play in the closing minutes of the game.

“I just stuck my right pad out there and kicked it off the line,” Poussard said.

The win is the second consecutive victory for Lewiston (7-3-1), which beat rival St. Dom’s 4-3 in overtime Saturday.

“I’m very happy that we came in here and didn’t have a letdown after a tough game against St. Dom’s,” Lewiston coach Jamie Belleau said. “To that extent, I’m happy. But I’m disappointed in the way we played the second half of the game.”

Scarborough (5-5-0) dropped its fourth straight, a string of games that started with a 5-4 loss to St. Dom’s at the Colisee after the Red Storm held a significant lead in the third period.

“Our last four games have been a great effort,” Scarborough coach Norm Gagne said. “We didn’t pack it in, and we could easily have packed it in after it was 3-0. They have to feel like they stole one. We just didn’t capitalize. we had the chances and we didn’t put the puck in the net.”

Gagne is all to familiar with Poussard, too, having coached him as a freshman at Lewiston last season.

“We expected this type of game from him,” Gagne said. “He’s a great goaltender.”

Lewiston’s tenacious forecheck produced the game’s first goal, just 2:18 into the contest, as Craig Sirois converted a Desmond Gagne feed in front of the net.

For the second consecutive game, Lewiston scored a key shorthanded goal. Ben McDonough was defending Jacob Rutt at the blue line with the Red Storm on the power play when Rutt blew a tire and fell hard to the ice. McDonough poked the puck past him and was off to the races, capping his chance by lofting the puck over Mayo at 7:14 for a 2-0 lead.

“We played great in the first period,” Belleau said. “We moved the puck up the ice, got the puck in deep and didn’t try to be too fancy. When we do that, we have some success.”

Scarborough enjoyed the better opportunities on the power play in the opening period, but Poussard stood tall, at one point stopping seven consecutive Red Storm shots.

Jordan Ropella gave the home team a 3-0 edge early in the second when he pounded home a rebound on the Devils’ third chance at a bouncing puck in the crease.

Nick Tolman broke up Poussard’s bid for a shutout at 10:24 of the second with a power-play goal set up on a slick move by Rutt.

The Red Storm finished the period 1-for-5 on the power play.

In the third, Scarborough cut the Blue Devils’ lead to 3-2 when a series of shots in front led to a Hunter Wood goal after Poussard lost his stick in a goalmouth scramble.

Zac Racine, the overtime hero for Lewiston against St. Dom’s on Saturday, fired home an empty-netter in the waning second to put Scarborough away. That shot was just the Blue Devils’ second of the frame to Scarborough’s 18.

“We’ll take it at this point,” Belleau said. “It’s not ideal, to have to hang on like that, but we’ll take it.”
