SABATTUS – Sabattus Central School held its annual National Geography Bee, sponsored by the National Geography Society, on Jan. 3. Students in grades four through eight qualified for the academic competition through several rounds of questions at the classroom level.

Ten students participated in the finals: Dustin Beard, James Davis, Alec Duquette, Derek Gamage, Colby Hobart, Olivia Maddox, Sam Morin, Alyssa Rouleau, Carina Weed and Nikolas Wilcox.

Jeff Caldwell hosted while Allyson Ferguson and Marguerite DeSanctis volunteered their time as judges and scorekeepers. Matt Reutershan also assisted.

Sixth-grader James Davis III won for the third straight year, answering correctly the question “Name one of the two landlocked countries that border India to the north.” Davis answered correctly with Nepal.

Carina Weed was runner-up and Alec Duquette came in third place. Davis will take a written exam in an attempt to qualify for the state level competition as he did last year.
