DIXFIELD – Selectmen gave the go ahead to Town Manager Tom Richmond to seek a reopening of the five-year lease the town had granted the U.S. Postal Service.

Richmond said Thursday morning that the lease, signed two years ago, must be reopened because of heating system problems in the building.

The town owns the building in which the Dixfield Post Office and the town offices are housed.

The five-year lease called for $13,000 per year in payments from the USPS. The town is hoping that figure can be increased because of the expected costs of replacing the heating system. Richmond estimated that replacement of the boilers will cost at least $25,000, a figure that he said would be difficult for townspeople to pay through taxes.

He said the heating system was installed when the building was constructed decades ago. He said the system is operational, but inefficient. A new system is expected to be more efficient and save the town on fuel costs.

In other matters on Tuesday, Richmond said the board approved:

• A liquor license for the Bear-ly Inn bed and breakfast on Weld Street. The business is no longer a restaurant opened to the public, but serves meals to guests and private parties.

• The purchase of software for the water and sewer departments at a cost of $1,400.

The board also entered into a nearly one-hour closed session to discuss goals for the town manager.

A special board meeting was set for 5 p.m. on Nov. 19, to discuss the Time Warner cable television franchise and to take up a personnel matter.
