What’s in a name?
DEAR DR. ROACH: How does a medical condition get named? Once named, can the name be changed (for example, Lou Gehrig’s disease, ALS)? I have a condition called hemiplegic migraines. It is rare and misunderstood. I am part of an online support group, and many people with the condition feel it should be renamed because […]

Credit card returned, crochet pattern wanted
DEAR SUN SPOTS: I want to thank the person who picked up the credit card I dropped in the Food City parking lot. They returned it to the service desk. If they hadn’t done that, I never would have known I had lost it. God bless the people who found it. I send many blessings […]

Veterans Council seeking names for war memorial
Dear Sun Spots: Every year the L/A Veterans Council dedicates a memorial stone at the Veterans Memorial Park, next to the Great Falls on Main Street in Lewiston. This year the dedication will be on Memorial Day. Auburn is celebrating its sesquicentennial (150th) anniversary with a parade starting at Kennedy Park near Simone’s that will go through […]

Better oversight on supplements would be a welcome change
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 72-year-old retired operating room nurse. I grow tired of seeing endless television advertisements for “holistic” remedies that claim to cure everything from low testosterone and erectile dysfunction to baldness. The ones that claim to “cure” enlarged prostate are particularly infuriating. They might as well claim to “cure” breast cancer. […]

Vitamin E worth a trial for some NASH patients
DEAR DR. ROACH: I was diagnosed with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis and had very high AST and ALT numbers. I lost about 25 pounds, and the numbers were normal. As a result of other health issues, the weight came back and the numbers went up. My liver specialist suggested we try 800 IU of vitamin E daily. Without losing weight the reports are now in the normal range. Although it will not clear the existing damage, this will prevent further damage. It’s worth suggesting that people try this. If it works, great. If it doesn’t, no harm has been done. — J.T.

Son keeps his social life out of his parents’ view
DEAR ABBY: Our 22-year-old son stays with us. He has a part-time job and goes to school part-time. He is somewhat secretive. We don’t know his friends or where he goes. One day he brought a male friend over and they hung out in our guesthouse, drinking and playing video games. This went on for […]

Grandma is collateral damage in man’s war with mother
DEAR ABBY: I’m close to 70 and have three grown children. I’ve been a widow for 15 years. My oldest son, age 45, has pretty much cut himself off from our fairly close family. His reason: Two years ago, after I had surgery for lung cancer, he claims I told him I wished I had […]
